Happy birthday XXXB

A celebration of Batemans finest brew

Batemans celebrated a very special birthday earlier in the year with two key events to mark the 40th anniversary of its multiple award-winning XXXB beer.

Brew Day

FDuring a special event called Brew Day, the guests of honour included four generations of Batemans master brewers – Dennis Hartley (1959-1975), Ken Dixon (1976-1984), Martin Cullimore (1985-2017) and the current brewer, Scott Lawrence, who took over the reins last year. It was Ken Dixon who crafted the first brew back in 1978.

Whilst retaining its unique flavour, this award-winning brew has been re-launched as a slightly stronger 4.8 ABV. Back in the day it won CAMRA’s Champion Beer of Britain and went on to win additional awards including Champion Best Bitter and Champion Premium Beer.

Other important invitees to this special event were the editor of the Good Beer Guide, Roger Protz, and two competition winners, Michael and Hannah Borrill from Lincoln who won their invite via a Batemans Facebook competition. Roger penned a special article for his popular website, Protz on Beer, and you can read what he had to say here.

VIP Tasting Event

Later in the month on 26th January, Batemans Beer Club members were invited to the Visitors Centre for an exclusive VIP tasting event before the beer went on general sale. Sixty or so members were personally served by Stuart Bateman himself, in Mr George’s Bar at the Brewery. The assembled crew were in agreement that the new brew maintained the high bar set by its predecessors.

Hip, hip horray and a happy birthday to XXXB.
