George Bateman & Son Ltd began brewing for the local farming community around Wainfleet, Lincolnshire in 1874. This family-run business, now fourth generation, is still brewing on the same site today. But, although justifiably proud of its past, this is no anachronistic concern. It is a modern and forward looking company firmly focused on the present and future as the state of the art brew house, the refurbishing of pubs and purchase of new ones, clearly shows. One thing that hasn't changed though since its founding is the Brewery's continuing commitment to the communities it serves, ranging from providing valuable employment around Wainfleet to supporting charities and sporting interests, either directly or indirectly through the pubs in its estate. The Brewery clearly recognises the important roles that pubs play within local communities, including being meeting places, centres of activity and local life or just somewhere to go for a good pint and a chat; all elements that chime nicely with CAMRA's (Campaign for Real Ale) Community Pubs campaign. In turn the Brewery is seen by its customers as a company that cares. Of course added to all this is the undeniable fact that Batemans brews some pretty fine beer too!![]()

We have a very open relationship with Batemans with regard to how our business is doing financially. Batemans has full access to our accounts as per agreed in our tenancy contract. In return for this access Batemans has included a 'reward for success' in our contract. In short this basically means the more we turnover the more 'reward' we will receive at the end of each trading year (this is dependant on barrelage) and, at the end of our six year term based on the previous year's accounts, we will also receive a 'reward'.
"This open book policy we have with Batemans really does mean we are all striving for the same goals and able to work together to achieve them. Both my husband and I also feel this 'rewards for success' programme goes towards creating a good honest relationship between tenant and Brewery.![]()

More than a year ago I offered my services to Batemans and was invited to demonstrate how I could add value to a tenant's bottom line. Since then, and following a successful trial case, I have worked extensively providing a service to tenants. Although an 'outsider' I have felt increasingly close to the operational initiatives which the Company has developed to support tenants on a continuing basis. Most of these initiatives are industry leaders, demonstrating the caring attitude from the Managing Director through the whole organisational structure. Emblazoned on much Company literature and pub signs are the words 'Good Honest Ales'. Elsewhere, one can find the words 'Good Honest Pubs run by Good Honest People'. I have to say that this honesty coupled with the sincerity in the way Batemans does business demonstrates sound business ethics, probably initiated by the late George Bateman. It is a company with which I am proud to be associated and in my opinion sets a standard that others will seek to follow but would find hard to match. I see and hear much by way of evidence of the successful partnership that has developed between Brewery and tenant as I make my visits and meet a cross section of the tenanted community. It is evident that the Bateman Company cares and will strive to ensure its tenants are afforded every opportunity to establish and operate successful businesses. George Bateman & Son Ltd is perhaps the leading operator of a tenanted estate in the UK and I am delighted to lay claim to that recommendation and endorsement. As an incidental postscript I must add that as a life member of CAMRA I truly relish the Batemans ales!![]()

We have been with Batemans for 10 years and have found them to be an excellent Brewery to work with. We both think that it has been a work in progress, as much as you put in, Batemans put the same into suporting you. We felt after five years we would like to take the next step forward, so after speaking to the Profit Partnership team and voicing our concerns about moving, we talked it through many many times and had a look around the estate when pubs became available. It wasn't until the Butcher and Beast became available everything began to come into place. When we first walked into the pub we felt that with hard work this could be the one for us. We met with Dale and together we decided to take that huge step and move from the comfortable zone to one of not knowing what would happen. We had great support and are still having the support from everyone at the Brewery and we feel that they really want us to succeed, not just because of the money but we feel they genuinely want us to do well because they believe in us.
One thing we would say is it's a business partnership, a partnership in trust, a family run business to help another family run buisnesses.![]()

Butcher and Beast, Batemans Publicans of the Year 2010
Our company has been a tenant of Batemans in various pubs for the past 20 years, the longest continual tenancy being 17 years. In that time we have found them to be at the verv front of the industry when dealing with a landlord/tenant relationship. Their true belief in wanting the tenant to succeed has always been very apparent, which in turn creates a very pleasurable working relationship. Over the years we have developed many successful ventures together and sincerely hope this will be the case for many years going forward. ![]()

We have worked with the Batemans Brewery team for over two years, they really embrace the true meaning of partnership with suppliers, tenants and consumers. In a difficult market they are constantly looking to innovate, create relationsnips and develop pubs. This has been demonstrated by the development at The Mill in Boston. This project epitomizes the level of success that can be achieved with a true partnership approach. Working as the designers and contractors we attended the Batemans Brewery recruitment open day which proved successful in recruiting the right tenants, we then all worked together to design and develop the thriving pub we see today. We are proud to be associated with a business with traditional values combined with an appetite for success. ![]()

I would like to say on behalf of myself and my staff, that we have always held Batemans in high regard for the support and help that I have always received. They are a friendly bunch, not a load of "so & so's". We have a good relationship - long may it continue.![]()

I have been a Licensing Officer for Lincolnshire Police since 2001, during which time I have worked with a full range of licensed premises on a full range of licensing matters. From the corner shop through to large nightclubs, some managed, some freehold and some tenanted. I have addressed matters such as drugs on premises and underage drinking, through to issues with particular individuals involved in Crime and Disorder to name but a few. Batemans, unlike some others, offer support and assistance on all matters highlighted to them. They are consistent attendees of local Pub Watches, where their tenants play active roles in order to maintain low levels of Crime and Disorder in their premises. The implementation of the Licensing Act certainly sorted the men from the boys, and I can honestly say, hand on heart, that Batemans were leaders in this field in Lincolnshire. They ask questions of all the responsible authorities in order to best facilitate and maintain the smooth running of their premises in all aspects, in order to comply with all four of the Licensing Objectives. The efficiency of the office staff was, and remains, exemplary. As a result of this my job was and remains, so much easier, and for that I thank Batemans and their employees, from the top to the bottom. I look forward to many more years of partnership working with Batemans.![]()
