In 1874 one draught beer was brewed at the Brewery, by 1960 eight were brewed. Three draughts - a light mild, dark mild and XB bitter, the dark mild and XB bitter are still on the draught portfolio - five bottled beers, IPA, Nut Brown, Dinner Ale and B.B.B. Up until the mid 70's, Batemans were also bottling naturally conditioned Guinness, Bass and Worthington. In 1980, Batemans decided to discontinue brewing light mild but added a premium ale to their portfolio, which was later to become one of the top premium ales in England, XXXB. In October 1987, to celebrate the end of the "Battle for Independence" and in conjunction with CAMRA, a beer known as Victory Ale was brewed.
Up until August 1993, Batemans bottled their own beers - IPA, Nut Brown, they then added Victory Ale, XXXB Ale and Valiant, the later three were not only sold in supermarkets throughout the UK but also in North American, Japan and Europe.
A few years ago the decision had to be made whether to continue bottling which would mean spending a considerable amount of money on a new bottling line, or have the bottling contracted out. It was decided to go to Marstons for the bottling. Batemans now produce in bottle XXXB, Combined Harvest, Dark Lord and seasonal beers.
On the cask beer side, Batemans Brewery now brews five core brands. Dark Mild which has been voted Mild of the Year by CAMRA three times, XB, XXXB, which since being voted 'Beer of the Year' in 1986 has been voted Premium Beer of the Year five times, Salem Porter which has been voted Winter Beer of the Year in 1997 & 2005 and Valiant was added to the core range in 2005. Valiant is a delicious golden beer, clean, crisp & zesty. ABV 4.2%
Batemans have also become known for the specialist beers and beer concepts it puts together. The first concept was 'Mr. George's Unique Flavours'. These were beers brewed a bit different from the norm using various fruits of the season and other interesting flavours e.g. strawberries, vanilla, liquorice to name but a few. The strawberry beer went down very well the only problem was that it was difficult to get the flavour of strawberries out of the pipes!
This range was then followed by Mystic Brew; the names and flavours of the beers were characteristic of the star sign e.g Leo was called Leo Golden Mane and was a powerful and golden beer. Mystic Brews ran for two years.
In 1998 the famous Jolly Fisherman of Skegness celebrated his 90th birthday. To commemorate this occasion the first ever long-term partnership between a brewer and its local council evolved. Batemans brewed a different beer each month known as Jolly's Jaunts, which represented an activity that was happening that month. The World Cup, the Five Nations, Wimbledon etc. This range was so successful that by the end of the year 'Jolly' had become a brand in its own right and it was decided to continue the concept.
The 1999 range was known as Jolly's Generation; it represented Jolly's ancestors as pioneers, explorers and inventor over the last 1000 years leading up to the Millennium Celebrations.
2000 continued with the theme of the Jolly Fisherman; this year he was partaking in the major sporting and social events which are taking place each month throughout the year.
2001 concept was GOOD HONEST'ALES which continued in 2002. This was a series of beers depicting characters and events through history which were part reality and part fantasy. The beers were all unique brews using various styles of malt and different hop varieties.
In 2007 Batemans are continuing to brew a range of speciality / seasonal beers including their very popular Christmas Beer, Rosey Nosey. This will be available from November and available in both bottle and draught.
